Seven-note scales, modal scales

So, I was chatting with my classmates. We were thinking of a way to simplify the seven-note scales.
After a lot of thinking and laughing me and two of my friends came out with this one...

Okay, let's make it this way.

Just mix Lydian sharp 4th and Mixolydian Flat 7th and you'll get it.
Of course, this mix is more common, there are other mix as well.

Block 1

The recording I bought, Live in Japan, The Christian Jacob Trio, arrived, and it inspired me greatly. I really admire Christian Jacob's playing, touch and the power.I love it! ^_^
Therefore, I figured I want to do a little jazzy piano piece this afternoon after my viola class.

That piece I'm working on is called Tower. Yeap, I wanted to try my hands on doing some jazz piano. I don't have much experience in this, but well, I got to start somewhere to know where I am and improve from that level.

I always tell myself to do things that I'm not confident with, because if I don't do it, I will never know if I can do it. If I can't do it, so what? At least I did do it. It is way better than not doing anything.

Electone Festival Regional Audition 2011

As title says, today I've joined the senior ensemble section in the central region audition of the EF this year. We arranged Smile by Yoshihiro Andoh and performed it.
9am reach the hall, sound check, then eat 1 foot long Subway Club, back to hall 3pm start EF.
Well, I have to say our hard work had gotten us far. No matter what results we get next two weeks, I'll still be happy that I've joined and played with you guys :)
I absolutely love the piece Penny played, Symphonic Journey. You played it great :D I enjoyed it.
And, Wei Fung... hah, what should I say, you rock! Almost everything is done by you, composition, registration, rhythm and all, I have utmost respect for you.
Ruth, stop thinking you played badly, you played well! >:O Our Smile will not be the same without the pianist.
Good job all! ^__^

P.S. Rule of the Blood! Waaaah, I love that piece too. *ish playing*

Ancient Sound - Ancient Forest

After days of head cracking, I've finally able to say it is completed.
Though there will still be changes after I meet my lecturer this week.

Continue from my previous post, this is the interpretation I did for Paul Klee's painting, Ancient Sound.

I start by focusing on the bright side of the pic before extending to the darker side. I take the bright side as fireflies, and the celesta is the one depicting it. The celesta also plays the stream part and a few others. The flute depicts a variety of things and animals and give colors to the scene. Vibraphone mostly depicts the plants and the crickets. The cabasa is the wind and provides the drive when needed. Piano is the main element which goes from bright to dark, it depicts the shadow and darkness when necessary.

Please forgive the choppiness of the (particularly)piano and other instruments, I used the Finale VST and added a bit of reverb. And the castanets are sounding weird :P

Painting composing

Lately I've been doing an assignment about making a composition based on a painting by one of the three artists.

So I went through Paul Klee's paintings and fell in love with them. I like the way Paul Klee express certain titles/event/things through his paintings.

I chose this in the end.

He named this Ancient Sound.
What appealed to me is the shade of the colors, the brightness in the forest, the dark and deep forest. What will light the way for the person who just got exiled from his homeland? This is the impression it gives me.
Of course I can't hide the fact that the name of the painting has a certain impact on me, haha.

Now the challenge begins. I have never composed based on a painting.
And I can not be too free as there are certain boundaries the lecturer gave us.
I am very excited about how it will turn out, but I'm afraid at the same time xD
This is going to be interesting...
